Team building is an important consideration for any business. But it can be difficult for some entrepreneurs, trainers and facilitators to even figure out where to start. That’s where WorkshopBank comes in.
WorkshopBank is an online community that provides information, techniques and resources for trainers and businesses that need help with things like team building. You can read more about the business below in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.
What the Business Does
Shares training and event tools for businesses.
Founder Nick Martin told Small Business Trends, “WorkshopBank is an online community started in 2009 for trainers, event designers and facilitators. Through sharing tools, resources, and educational materials, we aim to save our members time, emotion, and energy in their work so they can focus on what matters: creating impact.”
Business Niche
Offering an engaged community.
Martin says, “WorkshopBank is different from other business websites because we are an active & engaged community of more than 10,000 people from all over the world who help and learn from each other. It’s not just about creating events, anyone can create an event. It’s about creating spaces that are positive, meaningful, and inspirational for the participants that experience them.”
Biggest Win
Getting laid off.
Martin got laid off from his job at a ski company early in 2016. This allowed him to dedicate more time to the site and its members.
He says, “Without that opportunity we’d still just be a blog.”
Biggest Risk
Developing a new service.
Martin explains, “We’re testing the waters to see if we can match companies looking for trainers to our members. We’ve invested a lot of time, effort and money into setting this service up but we’re fairly confident it’s needed as we get a lot of ad hoc enquiries already.”
Lesson Learned
Quality content is important.
Martin says, “We’d spend a lot more time creating content at the start. Now that we have a few more plates spinning it’s difficult to find the time to add new tools on to the site that our members kindly send in.”
How They’d Spend an Extra $100,000
Hiring more writers to add tools and techniques to the website.
Martin says, “Currently our members send more in that we can handle.”
Favorite Tool
Post-Its.
Martin says, “You’re probably not surprised to hear that we use a lot of our own tools & techniques. As a result we use a lot of post-it notes (one of our core tools as facilitators). Last year we worked out that if each of our members used the same amount of post-its we use in a year and we piled them all on top of each other we could build a tower the height of Mount Everest. Every single year!”
